Manhattan


A Manhattan is a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. The whiskey-based Manhattan is one of five cocktails named for a New York City borough.

The Manhattan is not a light cocktail. It is a very liquor-forward cocktail because it includes alcohol alone and is diluted with just a small amount of water during preparation.

They have similar mellow sweetness but a Manhattan has more complexity than comes from the Sweet Vermouth. Dark red fruit, subtle herbal hints, and sometimes even vanilla or cola-like flavors can be contributed by the vermouth depending on which one you choose

History: The most popular theory is that the recipe was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall in the early 1880s for a party by Lady Randolph Churchill, the mother of Winston Churchill. The supposed explanation behind the name of the drink is that this party was held in the Manhattan Club in New York.


Suggestion: A strong cocktail with slight bitterness and some herbal undertones from the bitters and vermouth. Seasoned drinkers may pick up underlying sweetness from the SweetVermouth & whiskey. Choose a Manhattan if you're looking for something multi-dimensional with very little sweetness.

As with the first instance of the term, the word itself can be left for debate too..but there are three popular theories that we’ve summarised for you: The Egg-Cup Theory (Coquetier) According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the origin of the cocktail is down to a mispronunciation of the French word for eggcup coquetier (pronounced in English as a cocktail). A New Orleans apothecary (and inventor of Peychaud bitters), Antoine Amédée Peychaud, served brandy with his bitters in eggcups in the late 18th century.
