Where does the word cocktail actually come from?

Where does the word cocktail come from? Where did the word come from? As with the first instance of the term, the word itself can be left for debate too..but there are three popular theories that we’ve summarised for you: The Egg-Cup Theory (Coquetier) According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the origin of the cocktail is down to a mispronunciation of the French word for eggcup coquetier (pronounced in English as a cocktail). A New Orleans apothecary (and inventor of Peychaud bitters), Antoine Amédée Peychaud, served brandy with his bitters in eggcups in the late 18th century. The Dregs Theory (Cock tailings) “Cock tailings” was a term used to describe the mixture that was created when tavern owners combined the dregs (tailings) of nearly empty barrels. The resulting mixture from several barrels would then be sold at a discounted price. This only makes sense when you know that the spigot (tap) of a barrel was sometimes referred to as a “cock.” The Docked Horse Theory (Cock T...

Things you should do if you have a hangover.

Time is the only sure cure for a hangover. In the meantime, here are a few things you can do to help yourself feel better: Fill your water bottle. Sip water or fruit juice to prevent dehydration. Resist any temptation to treat your hangover with more alcohol. It'll only make you feel worse. Take a pain reliever. Drink fluids. Alcohol promotes urination because it inhibits the release of vasopressin, a hormone that decreases the volume of urine made by the kidneys. If your hangover includes diarrhea, sweating, or vomiting, you may be even more dehydrated. Although nausea can make it difficult to get anything down, even just a few sips of water might help your hangover. Get some carbohydrates into your system. Difference be Cocktail and Mocktail

Cocktail The term cocktail is used to refer to a mixture of different drinks with one of the drinks being alcoholic. It is important to highlight that a standard cocktail must contain a spirit, a sugary drink, and a sour or bitter drink. It is worth noting that cocktails can include juices, honey, fruits, herbs, and soda among others. Mocktail A mocktail is a combination of several drinks with no alcohol added to the blend. The only difference between a mocktail and a cocktail is that no alcohol or spirit drink is added while making the product. For example, a combination of fruit juice and soda constitutes a mocktail because none of the two products is alcoholic. Alcoholic Content in Cocktail and Mocktails One of the primary differences between a cocktail and a mocktail is that a cocktail has significant alcohol content while a mocktail does not have alcohol content. This is because the cocktail is prepared by combining several beverages with one of the drinks being alcoholic. Moreove...

Vegan Alcohol Ultimate Guide

Image
Are Vegan Cocktails really Vegan ?? Vegan alcohol includes spirits, beer, wine and cocktails which are free from animal products. Like the food we eat, vegans choose to avoid non-vegan alcohol and any products with animal-derived ingredients. The most common non-vegan ingredients in alcohol are isinglass, made from the dried swim bladders of fish, gelatine, made from boiled bones, flesh and ligaments, casein, a protein derived from cow’s milk, and albumin from egg whites. You may be surprised to realise that some beers, wine and cocktails include animal products. That’s because many ingredients are hidden, such as isinglass which is used in the filtration process. Producers are under no obligation to list the animal products used in the production process, so you often can’t identify vegan drinks by their labels. Thankfully, there is lots of ‘accidentally vegan’ alcohol including beers, wine, and other alcoholic drinks – plus some delicious choices from independent vegan retailers. And...
